The news, with a bit of spin

France Knocked Out 3-1 by Canada, the Club Player Blames Bad Intentions

France were knocked out in the second round of the Davis Cup by Canada (3-1). Paul-Henri Mathieu, in charge since November 2023, could be the first to go according to RMC, which names Richard Gasquet and Lucas Pouille as possible successors.

Céline, an interclub player, stands courtside with a folder of statistics, looking at a "3-1" scoreboard she has covered with a label reading "intentions", in front of an empty captain's bench.

People look at the scoreline, 3-1, and they’re already onto what comes next. What I see is that at this level, everything comes down to intentions. A team that hasn’t managed better than a quarter-final in seven editions since 2019, and even that came in 2025 against Belgium, is a team that isn’t setting its patterns properly. A quarter-final, you understand, is the ranking saying no before the net even gets involved. And this result drops France to tenth in the ITF nations ranking. Tenth. I’ll accept a tenth place in club league (interclubs, Belgium’s weekend team league) when it’s pouring rain and the bubble’s already booked out. Not when you’re representing a country.

Take Paul-Henri Mathieu. World number 12 during his playing career, so he’s got the groundstrokes, he knows how to read a zone. But when a group stops responding, it’s often the stringing. Just saying, not saying. And the 2024 failure, missing out on the Malaga Final Eight, was already weighing on his record, so naturally this exit adds to the file. Captaincy is a job of intentions, not forehands.

In club league (interclubs, Belgium’s weekend team league), Sunday at ten, if you don’t set your intentions from the warm-up, you’re out in the first round of the bubble. This 3-1, I work on it Tuesday evenings, when court 4 is free. Which is never. The level in club league has gone way up, people don’t realise.

Then there’s the aftermath. RMC names two candidates for the succession: Richard Gasquet and Lucas Pouille. Pouille, a semi-finalist at the 2019 Australian Open, never officially retired, and Arthur Rinderknech’s coach since 2025. The double workload, two practice sessions away, I know it well. You run between the bench and court 4, setting intentions for two game plans at once, and eventually the stringing says no. Until it does, anything’s possible. But a captain still carrying his own career in his pocket, I’d say that’s like playing with old strings: it might hold, but don’t pull too hard on it.

People judge the scoreline. What I see is a team that lost its intentions before the games did. And in the Davis Cup, that’s not something you make up for at the clubhouse bar. Not even with a cone of chips, for recovery.
