The news, with a bit of spin

Bublik would teach nobody his game as a coach: Monique thinks of rice tart

Asked by the Russian outlet Championat, Alexander Bublik, world No. 22, said that if he ever coached, he would teach nobody to play like him. Beaten in Shanghai by Alexander Zverev, he now plays in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Monique runs a lone kermesse table with a rice pie while a puzzled tennis player holds an open recipe book.

The young man Bublik lost to Alexander Zverev in Shanghai, in the round of 16. He is going home to play in Almaty. It is good to go home after a trip like that.

He talked for a long time to a Russian paper, Championat. He says that if he became a coach, he would teach nobody to play like him. When you train and are disciplined, he says, the chances are higher.

In Couvin, a neighbour made the best rice tart in the parish. She never gave out the recipe. She said she made it badly, that you had to follow the book. Everybody followed the book. Nobody ever made one as good.

He says he reached the top ten, stayed in the top twenty, won plenty of tournaments. He perhaps trains a little less, he says, but it is the same routine, and he stays alive in it with his emotions. He says there is room for people like him, but very little.

The neighbour had her place at the parish fair too. One table.

The others had the book.

It’s true, we checked: We Love Tennis.
